The enlightened nature of Julie’s words have a simple and strong storytelling language. Painting these visuals transported me to a meditative place. Many of the ideas flowed through me while reading the words and the rest came when I was ready to receive more.

The use of watercolour paint allows me to work in soft complimentary womblike layers. I chose to use a colour palate moving through the rainbow spectrum, allowing for a full range of emotions to be explored. The repetitive dots create a dynamic sense of movement and depth throughout the book, visually suggesting a sense of spirit, aura or intangible energy.

I graduated with a BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 2004, focusing on painting and photography. I spent the next 15 years based in Vancouver BC working as a published professional photographer, noted contemporary artist, public speaker and educator.

I now reside on the side of a mountain with my family and continue to paint large murals, little watercolors, and many nature-inspired projects with my children. It has been a true pleasure and honour to create the illustrations for this book.

I am honoured to be a part of this project as it commemorates the short lived life of my baby niece, Anastasia. She was a beautiful little girl with a spirit too big for this world. This book, written in her honour, holds a special place in my heart, and so does she. Being the bridge between the written words and the illustrations came naturally to me, given my background in design. Holding a Masters in Architecture has prepared me to consider the way in which design impacts the human experience. Devoting and dedicating my time to this project has played a big role in my healing journey. My hope is that this little gem of a book sparkles as bright for you as my little niece did for me. Sharing my love and gratitude with all of you who read this.
